I'm writing to you again following my email last Friday about the inquest into the tragic death of Ben, an Explorer Scout. Ben died when he fell from the Great Orme in August 2018. We were all truly saddened by Ben's tragic death, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.
You will already know we have collective responsibility for safety. This is a timely reminder to check that your training records are up-to-date.
What I need you to do:
- Please ensure that you have completed your mandatory training (including Getting Started, safety and safeguarding), if you are unsure please ask your manager (for example, your section leader or Group Scout Leader).
- Check that training is recorded correctly on our membership system called Compass. You can follow the instructions on our website to log in, and then click on the ‘training’ tab.
- Please ensure you and your team are undertaking risk assessments and following our activity rules. Check out our A to Z of activities for further support.
If you are a trustee or executive committee member and have no other roles, your training requirements are slightly different; however, I would be grateful if you could support others through this process locally.
We will be focusing on these issues during our upcoming all member webinar together on Tuesday 12 May at 7pm. You can add it to your diary now.
The safety of young people is our number one priority, and I know we all take this responsibility very seriously. Thank you for everything you are doing for Scouts and ensuring that we can all continue to enjoy activities safely.
